Day 7: Montezuma/San Jose

We linger as long as possible on Montezuma Beach, before beginning our journey back to San José.

The walls and buildings along Montezuma’s dirt road from Hotel La Cascada into town are decorated with brightly colored murals.

Montezuma’s holistic lifestyle makes this small town a popular location for yoga retreats and classes.

Our favorite place for breakfast in Montezuma open at 7:00am, Soda Monte Sol.

Our last day in Montezuma, we return for one more breakfast of yogurt, fresh fruit, granola, cheese, and delicious banana pancakes at Soda Monte Sol.

After breakfast, we take a walk on the beach before returning to our hotel. Many small hermit crabs can be seen wandering along the sand. Costa Rica is home to over eight hundred species of hermit crabs, but only about fifteen percent live on land.

After packing our bags, we eat lunch at Chelo Pizzeria. Our delicious thin crust pizzas are accompanied by bread and a spicy dipping sauce.

Our time has come to say goodbye to Montezuma. We take a public bus through the narrow, winding mountain roads into Paquera to board the ferry to Puntarenas.

Aboard the ferry, the sky darkens and thunder echos over the ocean. Lightening flashes in the distance as the rain begins to fall and the wind whips over the deck. We quickly scamper to the small covered area in the back of the ferry attempting to stay dry in the heavy rain.

Through the darkness, the lights of Puntarenas slowly come into view from the Puntarenas Paquera Ferry. Our bus drives off the ferry and we re-board for the final leg of our journey back to San José.

Arriving in San José around 10:00pm, we quickly check into our hotel, Boutique Hotel Casa Las Orquideas, and walk down the street to a local cafe for a traditional Costa Rican dinner.
