Day 6: Montezuma

We cross three beaches during the 45 minute walk from Montezuma Beach to Playa Grande of Montezuma. After an exhausting day of surfing, we dine on barbecued meats, drink by a bonfire on the beach, and celebrate at reggae night in Chico’s Bar.

Returning from our hike to Montezuma Falls, we meet our G Adventures group in the lobby of Hotel La Cascada to begin the walk to surfing lessons under the false impression it will take the typical Costa Rican time frame of twenty minutes.

Our walk continues, weaving throughout jungle paths and across three beaches varying from black volcanic rocks and white powder sand to the tiny colorful pebbles of Piedra Colorada.

Every morning a local artist used to build a balanced rock garden along the beaches of Piedra Colorada, Montezuma. Although the artist no longer lives in the area, locals continue the tradition.

We enter Nicolas Wessberg National Reserve, named after the founder of Costa Rica’s National Park System, Olof Wessberg.

Three miles later, we arrive at Young Vision Surf School. Rash guards and surf boards are handed out for us to carry to the beach. Separating into groups, we practice paddling and standing up on surf boards drawn in the sand before paddling out to the waves.

We stood up on our first attempt and rode the wave into shore. After a draining hour in the ocean, we re-hydrate and snack on fresh mangoes and papayas.

A howler monkey in Montezuma

Exhausted, we return our boards and shower off in the icy stream of water. Hearing the ear shattering bark of a howler monkey, we see a small black and tan monkey jumping around in the trees above us.

We begin our return hike to Montezuma Beach at a much slower pace. Finally reaching town, we stop for a couple of drinks at Chico’s Bar outdoor beach patio. Before finishing our walk back to the hotel, we scarf down a slice of pizza at Brunos Pizza.

Bonfire at Montezuma Beach

As the sun begins to set, we walk downstairs for a delicious dinner of barbecued meats, fruit, and salad. Finishing our meal, our group heads to the beach for a bonfire and drinks before walking into town for reggae night at Chico’s Bar.

Mitch Proposing 4/12 on Montezuma Beach

On the way to Chico’s, Mitch stops to take a photo of the small town’s lights reflecting on the ocean. It’s extremely dark along the road and even darker on the beach. He suggests we walk onto the beach to get a better photo. Thinking this is a terrible photo, I pause halfway down the small bank to the beach.

Waiting on the road, my sister asks if we want a photo together. As I tell her I do not want dark beach photo, she orders me to stand next to Mitch for a picture and he hands her the camera. I take a step to walk back towards the road, when Mitch takes my hand, lowers down onto one knee, and pulls out a ring he has kept hidden the entire trip. I don’t comprehend a word as I realize what is happening and answer absolutely to a question I only half hear him ask.

We are greeted by congratulatory hugs by the rest of our group members at Chico’s Bar and end the night celebrating, dancing, and watching the nightly fire show.
