A local American business icon was on a scooter in Bermuda (no drivers license required for scooters) and was hit head on and killed in July. The page for Bermuda scooters warns of narrow steep roads with traffic on the opposite side of American roads (same as in the Bahamas). You were better off to follow your friends’ car not be in front of it.

I have never even touched one before and everyone told me not to… friends, sisters, my host, AND the rental place.. hahaa. But I practiced in the lot. Took my time to make sure I understood how it worked and what all the buttons were for, and within about 20 minutes the owner of the rental place (shavane of J and S rentals) changed his mind said he felt more comfortable after watching me practice. I took off with my travel buddies in their rental keep following me and I had a wonderful time! I was careful and stayed to the far left out of traffics way. And yes maybe I shouldn’t have but for me I have let fear and warnings from others keep me from so many thing I decided NO I am a responsible smart person and I can do this.. And it worked out!

Be careful, take proper precautions, but don’t miss out on adventure and making memories solely based on what others tell you. This is just my experience, but others are valid as well. Be safe and have fun!

Hi Linda, Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Riding a motorcycle in the States is dangerous with cars pulling out in front of you all the time but as you said some places are worse. I found a lot of places don’t really have traffic laws and signs, they are more like suggestions.

My husband and I rented a motorbike by the month when we lived in Indonesia and loved it. Did not love the traffic, however. Cars ignore the lanes to the point that they are sometimes four wide on a two-lane road…and every vacant space between the cars is always filled with cyclists.

I haven’t learned to drive a motorcycle (yet) so I left the driving to my husband Dan. It wasn’t the best time to learn, if you know what I mean. We were always careful to wear our helmets, too. Anyone who doesn’t is as crazy as an Indonesian driver, IMO.
