Help finding or adding photo from British Library

[edit]

Hello and thanks for your patience as I feel I'm losing my mind.

As part of my work on English Wikisource, I am currently transcribing and proofreading the 1611 edition of the King James Bible. I am presently trying to obtain a better version of the image at en:wikisource:Page:BibleKJV1611-001.pdf/76. This is a map by John Speed done for the 1611 edition of the KJV. I have found a few variants of this map already on commons, such as File:Canaan..._Begun_-_by_Mr_John_More_;_continued_and_finished_by_John_Speede_-_btv1b8491520b.jpg, File:John Speed, Canaan (FL36012616 3911705).jpg, and File:John Speed, Canaan (FL45605174 3942061).jpg. However, these are other versions of this exact map, and not good enough for use on this specific project. I have found the most reliable way to identify this *specific* image is by identifying one in black and white, looking at the "sea monster" in the center, which in the correct version is somewhat dog-like and faces the reader's left, and of course verifying that it says "1611" in the center bottom.

I have found a good-quality reproduction of this image at the British Library, shelfmark "Maps.*695.(2)". I have tried to find if this exact image is already in commons by searching for this shelfmark and in the category Category:Images from the British Library Mechanical Curator collection and subcategories. I've also looked at the British Library's Flickr page, but as you can see, these collections are both enormous and very difficult to search through. I have a persistent identifier for the image I need, and yet I cannot find it. I am trying to upload this image according to the standards set by the project Commons:British Library/Mechanical Curator collection, but that project seems to be more or less abandoned.

I am asking for help in one of the following ways:

  1. Locating a copy of this image already on wikimedia commons, so I can appropriately categorize it and include it on the Wikisource project
  2. Finding a high-quality copy of this image from the British Library in a way that has a clear free license or is public domain (ie from its flickr account, as the normal 'checkout' process on the BL's website does not grant an unlimited free license for use, despite the image {probably} being PD)
  3. Locating another high quality image of this two-paged map, that is an adequate reproduction of the illustration as it originally appears in the 1611 scan linked above. Another, similar image is inadequate for the standards of English Wikisource. OR....
  4. Giving me assurance that despite appearances, I can just download the image through the BL's normal "checkout" process and upload it here as an image in the public domain, despite BL's default non-free license.

Please help me. I'm a fairly experienced commons user, but dealing with massive pre-existing collections is always a pain, British copyright makes no sense to me, and Flickr's search is broken beyond repair. Thank you! Mathmitch7 (talk) 18:58, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I need a image I made mistakes with deleted, very sorry

[edit]

I uploaded this image [1] and messed up some of the details and information. The date is wrong, the source is wrong, and I fear the image is too poor of quality. It is completely my mistake and I’m more than willing to admit that. If someone could please remove it for me that’s be great. I’ll work to avoid mistakes like this in the future and I’m truly sorry.

(if this isn’t the right place to make this type of request, please let me know) Therguy10 (talk) 05:29, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Therguy10, there are several points to be addressed here. First: making errors is only human, and asking for help the correct way to go. Second: if you make an error that makes you wanting your recently uploaded file deleted, use the speedy deletion process. Third: working on logos is finicky about copyrights. As the nutshell here says: "[Commons] strictly enforces copyright and licensing restrictions, even if copyright holders do not." You need to have a quite thorough understanding about thresholds of originality and Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Trademarks to contribute meaningfully, without encountering IP rights issues (your upload at File:The Big Bad Wolf - Wolf’s Revenge logo.jpg would be OK as {{PD-Textlogo}}, but most likely only without the eye graphics). Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 05:41, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for that! I’ll try to tag it for deletion asap! Therguy10 (talk) 16:17, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
So as far as those text logos go, I’m starting to wonder if Wolf would actually be ok to use. My main logo comparison is something like Siren’s Curse logo. Maybe the eyes wouldn’t be a huge deal? Thoughts? Therguy10 (talk) 04:21, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Therguy10: Thanks for your comment. I believe that File:Siren's Curse Logo white background.png, as an work created in America, is likely to exceed the American threshold of originality, and is therefore unsuitable to be used as a comparison. I will consider its deletion after searching for further evidence. That same section also have a list of uncopyrightable and copyrightable files for your reference, regards.廣九直通車 (talk) 09:03, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Social media images under license Template:GODL-India?

Adding info to a page

[edit]

Hello,

I would like to add my grandfather Master Sergeant CWO2 Ivert F Shinske to the list of recipients of the Bronze star to the page, and I don't know how to do that. This is the page I am referring to:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Recipients_of_the_Bronze_Star_Medal_(United_States) Billbo1970 (talk) 21:38, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

you should create a category under "Category:Recipients of the Bronze Star Medal (United_States)". so, it will be on screens.
but i have not see any photos about that person. please upload or show us about it. @Billbo1970 modern_primat ඞඞඞ ----TALK 21:44, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Modern_primat,
No there is no page for him. I have never worked on wiki before so I'll have to look into making the page for him. Unfortunately, most of his records were lost in the National Archives fire of 1973. I received his OMPF a couple of years ago, and it is missing A LOT of information. Billbo1970 (talk) 19:44, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
sorry to hear that. it seems you cannot upload images here. no sources, no articles, no photos. but keep researching, i hope you will do it. modern_primat ඞඞඞ ----TALK 22:06, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Modern primat I have his official OMPF that I can scan and upload. I have the document stating all of the medals, awards, and citations he was given. If the US Federal Government is not a source, then I don't know what is! Billbo1970 (talk) 22:41, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Billbo1970: I'm trying to understand: are you wanting to put things up here as an illustration of particular medals, or because of this particular person who was your grandfather, or what? I realize that your grandfather was important to you, but usually we don't build up repositories of information about individuals here unless they are of some broader historic significance. @Modern primat: the existence of Category:Recipients of the Bronze Star Medal (United_States) does not mean that receiving a Bronze Star makes someone inherently notable by Commons standards. It's just a way to gather together which people of Commons-level notability received that particular decoration. - Jmabel ! talk 04:28, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel I want to add his name to the existing list of recipients for this medal. The vast majority of his records were burned in the 1973 fire at the National Archives, so it is good to have the information online digitally. Further, since this is a list of recipients, he is someone who should be on it. Billbo1970 (talk) 18:25, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Billbo1970: since what is a list of recipients? Normally, Commons does not have "list pages," that is more of a Wikipedia thing.
In the Vietnam War alone, 719,969 people received the Bronze Star. I cannot imagine we have a list of them, or that that brings 719,969 people up to the required level of notability. - Jmabel ! talk 20:12, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel This is the page I am referring to:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Recipients_of_the_Bronze_Star_Medal_(United_States) Billbo1970 (talk) 20:45, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Billbo1970: that category is not intended to be a comprehensive list of (millions of) Bronze Star recipients. It is a way to note, for a picture or category within Commons's scope that the person in question is a Bronze Star recipient. There has actually been some pushback lately against having Commons categories for recipients of particular medals, on the basis that that is more of a Wikidata or Wikipedia thing, but I suspect that the effort to get rid of these categories entirely is going nowhere. But it remains the case that for a decoration received by literally millions of people, just receiving that decoration does not qualify as "notability" and does not make materials related to that person inherently in scope. - Jmabel ! talk 22:03, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I need to walk away from this for now as I'm in snotty tears to the point I can't breath. which I hope does't get licensed to the world or maybe it needs to. Sorry, I thought I'd opened the message and wasn't able to respond to what I saw at the time. It was to do with whatever deed form I had to fill out. I hadn't filled things in that I were asked and would not have submitted half of what I did. Between being technologically challenged, having junk technology & burning myself out working for free there is a bit on my end. The confusion over figuring out if it's wiki who hacked me, someone else and the AI has just about driven me to suicide. It's difficult as I didn't understand exactly how to seperate what copyrights associated with different aspects of decades of community that's mainly seen me taken advantage of it's probably too late now anyways. Fortunately, Universal Asylum claimed global jurisdiction & declared world governments criminal organisations anyway so if any of what i believe were 6 licences I don't understand are too bad I'll consider then null and viod & whatever's relevant I treat with good faith. But if there are irrelevant ones that can be removed that would be great thanks Universal Asylum (talk) 21:23, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Some (not all) of the captions added to files by Universal Asylum look to me to be likely to be incorrect, but none are in areas where I have any expertise. Is there some reasonable way to ask someone to look into this? - Jmabel ! talk 04:38, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks guys. Yeah, I was in enough of a state when I reopened to find that it had gone through that all I recall was it didn't look like it coulda gone any worse. Now I've been here a while I think get how far I got stuck overcomplicating something simple, which I kinda knew I needed to cull 80% when it went down. Universal Asylum (talk) 08:31, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Is it normal for people to be hacked by your system? Sometimes I think it's just bugs in the AI then next minute it's like I'm being bullied by a pack of thugs. I am hacked and bad enough that it could only be by Wiki. They have access to everything. As I type this it threaterns to release it under the licence that I didn't even agree to. If I do a google search it takes the piss out of it. Sure not every wiki is in on but but expect the ones who are have caused suicides. Scary AF!! University trying to update image for biography

Hello! If I am part of the University trying to update the image of our Chancellor with a University owned photo - how do I do that? I personally do not own the photo, but the permissions to share are created by the institution. Thank you! Mgoehring (talk) 15:59, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Mgoehring: Hi, and welcome. We would need permission from Keegan Houser for the first photo on https://news.berkeley.edu/2024/04/10/rich-lyons-longtime-campus-business-innovation-leader-will-be-uc-berkeley-s-next-chancellor/ (specifically, the shown 1536 × 1024 pixels version or the 1920 × 1280 pixels larger version I found) as explained on VRT. Failing that, we would need permission from the Board of Regents of the University of California, along with a signed transfer of copyright or licensing rights from Keegan Houser, subject to the same explanation. Ask any faculty member in the Law Dept. You originally uploaded it as File:ChancellorsRichardKLyons.jpg, and Yann deleted it as a copyvio. Also, the "s" in "Chancellors" is superfluous, as he is one person.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:23, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you all! This is always a weird one because Keegan takes these photos in his role for the University. I'll get the formal release from him even though this particular photo is already released broadly for use with or with out credit. Mgoehring (talk) 18:11, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm confused. You say you "found [these] images on Flickr". (1) Are you User:Pitpisit, and if so why are you not logged in while asking this? (2) When you say "These images are tagged as being in compliance with Philippine copyright law," do you mean that the uploader tagged them as being in compliance, or that there is something on Flickr that I'm missing? (3) In general, copyright questions are much better asked at COM:VP/C than on the help desk. - Jmabel ! talk 20:29, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The template itself specifies that it only applies "unless otherwise noted". The flickr pages do note otherwise. PD-US-no notice advertisement no longer accepted by commons upload wizard

[edit]

Previously I have used the wizard numerous times to upload old advertisements with the "specific public domain tag" of PD-US-no notice advertisement (curly brackets included in original) used as the justification, but as of today this no longer appears to be accepted, although as far as I can tell this should still be valid. - Thomas H. White (talk) 22:35, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Thomas H. White: The main menu of the Upload Wizard may offer a selection of templates, probably those most likely to be widely used, but maybe not lesser-used templates. If "PD-US-no notice advertisement" was there but was removed, that is probably for such a reason of practicality, not because it is not accepted. The template still exist and it does not seem disputed, so you can use it. You can add it to the description pages, or you can use another upload form, or there might be a way to insert it even with the Upload Wizard (I don't know, I don't use it). Please do not forget to categorize your files. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:26, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Upload Wizard freezes

[edit]

I've previously been able to use the Upload Wizard without issues. Today, I tried to upload a huge file (well above 100 MB which I think is the limit for the wizard). Now any time I try, the Wizard freezes on the "Release rights" step after I click "Next". It doesn't matter what the file is. I can still upload without issue using the older method. Rjjiii (talk) 18:15, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Rjjiii: is it possible you are running afoul of the current bug described at phab:T383415, or are you using one of their default licenses? If it's not that, any further description of exactly what you are doing and what happens would be more useful.
Also, Upload Wizard issues are often better addressed at Commons:Upload Wizard feedback than on the general help page. - Jmabel ! talk 20:02, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh that is likely it. I have used the license {{PD-old-auto-expired}} for File:Skálholt map 1690 copy (cropped).png and {{PD-US-no notice}} for File:Passaic, New Jersey, Flying Saucer.png, and ran into issues for both where the browser froze. I didn't see any kind of error message but have uBlock on Firefox which will sometimes be overly aggresive in blocking popups and warnings. I just did an upload where I was able to select rather than type a license and had no issues. Thank you for the link and advice, Rjjiii (talk) 20:31, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm uploading an image with a CC Attribution Generic 2.0 license, but if I put that in the "Enter a different license" box the page hangs. There are no error messages. The upload wizard, at the section "1. Please choose why this work is free to share. Providing incorrect information may result in the deletion of your media," {{PD-Somalia}} is no longer available. @Misteredcraig: while it is usually helpful to link a particular article and/or file when asking a question, in this case I can tell you from what you've written that that isn't sufficient permission for Commons. Commons accepts only files that are either in the public domain (not relevant for this) or are free-licensed with an explicit license from the copyright holder, free enough to allow derivative works and commercial use. In a case like this, where I presume the image has already been published without any indication of such a license, we need the copyright-holder (that is typically the photographer) to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to indicate such a license. NOTE that this requires an email directly from the copyright-holder to the VRT. Yes, this is unusually stringent, but that is because this is supposed to be an archive of images that are freely reusable. - Jmabel ! talk 07:41, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Undeletion of File:Krishnakumarsinhjigohil.jpg

Dear Wikimedia Commons Administrators,

I am writing regarding the file File:Krishnakumarsinhjigohil.jpg, which has been marked for speedy deletion under CSD F10. I would like to request the undeletion of this file and provide clarification.

  1. Ownership: I am the rightful owner of this photo. It was either taken by me or by someone who has granted me full rights to upload it to Wikimedia Commons.
  2. Permission and Licensing: I understand Wikimedia Commons requires freely licensed content. I confirm that I am willing to license this photo under [choose a license, e.g., Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)].
  3. Purpose: This photo was uploaded to contribute to Wikimedia projects in good faith, and it is relevant to my profile or related work.

If any additional documentation is required to verify my claims, such as a permission statement or copyright declaration, please let me know, and I will provide it promptly.

Thank you for your time and assistance in this matter. I hope for a favorable resolution to reinstate the file.

Re: File Deletion - Request for Guidance
Dear Jmabel,
Thank you for your response and clarification regarding the deletion of my file. I appreciate your time in reviewing this matter.
I understand the concern regarding contributions to Wikimedia projects and the appropriateness of uploaded files. I would like to ask for guidance on how I can align my uploads with Wikimedia Commons' policies and expectations.
Could you please advise on the following:
  1. Documentation: If there are specific permissions or copyright declarations required to reinstate the file, I am happy to provide them promptly.
  2. Contributions: I am committed to contributing constructively to Wikimedia projects. If there are specific areas or projects where my participation could be valuable, please let me know how I can get involved.
  3. Resolution Path: Is there a possibility to appeal the deletion or have the file reinstated if I provide additional documentation or demonstrate active contributions?
I genuinely value the Wikimedia platform and its mission to share knowledge freely. Please let me know how I can address these issues and comply with the project's standards.
Thank you for your guidance and support.
Best regards,
Krishnakumarsinhji Gohil Krishnakumarsinhjigohil (talk) 04:38, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  1. Irrelevant. This was not a rights issue.
  2. When you've made a hundred or so significant edits to any WMF project, you can request undeletion of the personal photo at COM:UDR. (This presumes you intend to use it on your user page either on Commons or one or more of the sister projects; otherwise, it would still not be in scope.)
  3. See 2.

File Deletion - Seeking Further Clarification
Dear Jmabel,
Thank you for your prompt and detailed response. I appreciate the clarity regarding the expectations for significant contributions before requesting undeletion.
I understand the importance of actively contributing to Wikimedia projects and will focus on making meaningful edits and contributions across relevant projects. It is my intention to use the personal photo appropriately, either on a user page or within the scope of the Wikimedia guidelines, once I meet the contribution threshold.
If you have any additional suggestions on how I can effectively contribute or areas where my involvement could be most impactful, I would be grateful for your advice.
Thank you again for your guidance and for helping me better understand Wikimedia's standards. I look forward to becoming a more active and constructive member of this community.

Photos of vintage toys

[edit]

I am editing the Wikipedia article en:Brickplayer. This is a British construction toy that was produced from 1938 to the mid-60s by J. W. Spear and Sons. I have personally-taken photos of the Brickplayer kits, which are now anything from 60 to 80+ years old. Can I upload these to the Commons, or might this be a copyright violation? TonyOHagan (talk) 15:04, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@TonyOHagan: Are there copyright notices on any of the packaging?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:06, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No! The box says "British and Foreign Patents", but there are no copyright statements or symbols and no mention of a registered trademark. TonyOHagan (talk) 18:53, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Copyright notice probably wouldn't actually be relevant, because with the URAA restoration of UK copyrights in the U.S., unless they were "simultaneously" (within 30 days) published in the U.S., anything copyrightable from the UK in that era is still copyrighted in the U.S. (unless somehow it was already out of copyright in the UK in 1996), and will be until 95 years from initial publication. So (1) take advantage of en-wiki's allowance for non-free content to upload your best photo there (not involving Commons) and (2) if you have photos where you can firmly date the copyrighted elements, we can work something out for you to upload them here on Commons and then immediately delete them and note them to be undeleted at an appropriate date. For example, something with only a 1938 copyright could end up in Category:Undelete in 2034. - Jmabel ! talk 19:28, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is a quagmire. I cannot see what harm could possibly arise from including the Brickplayer logo and images of Brickplayer kit boxes and content. They would be helpful to readers of the Wikipedia page and make it more attractive, and if there still is a copyright holder they could hardly give a damn about a toy that has been defunct for 60 yeaers and could never be marketed to a modern consumer. But unfortunately the intricacies of Wikimedia requirements are labyrinthine. I have looked at the free-use guidance, and simply cannot be bothered to wade through all that stuff. So the page will not have images, full stop. But seriously, apologies for the rant and thanks for your help. I don't mean to sound ungrateful! TonyOHagan (talk) 19:54, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@CommunistCatGirl: not from just a DM, or anyone could claim they had permission. We'd need at least a public-facing post (which you can link from the "permissions" field of the {{Information}} template, and that post needs to grant a specific license (e.g. CC-BY 4.0). Category for Elite Hotels

[edit]

The category Category:Elite Hotels includes subcategories for "Elite Hotels of Sweden" and "Elite Hotels in China". This gives the impression that the hotel chain Elite Hotels has hotels in Sweden and Hotels. Well, there is a Swedish hotel chain called Elite Hotels, and when I checked their website, they didn't show any hotels in China, or any outside Sweden for that matter. This makes me wonder why the categories for China and Sweden are under the same category at all. Is the only reason that the hotels have the word "Elite" in their name? Should the categories be reorganised to avoid confusion? JIP (talk) 12:59, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@JIP: yes. And you might start by communicating with the person who created the category (if they are still around) to work out their intent. - Jmabel ! talk 19:19, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Foto op TAVEERNELAAN 5 te BOSCH EN DUIN

Ik wil graag de oude foto die op TAVEERNELAAN 5 BOSCH EN DUIN staat vernieuwen in huidige foto Hoe moet dat? Theoderijkwalburgis (talk) 15:11, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone who speaks Dutch (Nederlandisch) please look at this question? I can read the language a little, but from what I can tell it is very ambiguous to me, in particular what action is referred to by graag. - Jmabel ! talk 19:22, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: According to Google, the question is: "I would like to update the old photo on TAVEERNELAAN 5 BOSCH EN DUIN to the current photo. How do I do that?" I don't know how much you trust Google. Krok6kola (talk) 01:01, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not a lot, in this case. What does it mean update a photo to another photo? Overwrite it? That is rarely the right thing to do with any photo. And what photo (I'd guess File:Bosch en Duin Taveernelaan 5.jpg, but not confidently). If they have a different, more recent photo of this building, of course they can upload it, but not overwrite someone else's photo. - Jmabel ! talk 04:21, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Can somebody do it for me? This is mij e mail: [EMAIL ADDRESS SUPPRESSED] I can sent you the new picture of mij house.... Theoderijkwalburgis (talk) 08:16, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(email address suppressed, should not be posted this publicly; normally I would also hide all revisions that show it, but I think there have been far too many of that to be practicable.)
@Theoderijkwalburgis: no, basically, no one can do it for you because you have to go through the process of (1) asserting that you, not someone else, took the photo and (2) granting a specific free license. You could imaginably do that through the COM:VRT process instead of doing the upload yourself, but given that you already have an account here, that would almost certainly be more cumbersome. Use the Upload Wizard, it guides you through the process pretty well, especially for uploading a single photo that you took yourself (certainly a simple case). - Jmabel ! talk 22:27, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking to use a healthcare organization's logo. I've tried to research the public domain rights that I've seen applicable on other pages and how to upload the logo, but am not 100% sure on the process and want to make sure I'm not violating any rules. Thanks. Alpacaaviator (talk) 17:44, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That is probably copyrighted and hence does not belong on Commons unless there is a free license available, which is very unlikely. When you say you are "looking to use" it, do you mean for an article about the organization in the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki), or something else? If you mean an article about the organization in en-wiki, I recommend doing this entirely on en-wiki and leave Commons out of it. When you upload the image there, use en:Template:Non-free use rationale logo.
If "looking to use" meant something else, you will need to clarify. - Jmabel ! talk 19:25, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It would be for the Penn Highlands Healthcare page on en-wiki. On other organizations they used TM logos. Alpacaaviator (talk) 16:03, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I figured it out and found the appropriate guidelines for pdtext and trademark. I didn't realize I could upload directly on en-wiki but it's taken care of now. Thanks. Alpacaaviator (talk) 20:41, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Used Image with a CC BY-SA 3.0 & want to share modifications

[edit]

If I used a diagram with a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license and modified it for my classroom and would like to share it back to Wikimedia commons & give credit to the original author, how do I do that? I used this picture: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Urinary_system_-_Nephron_3_--_Smart-Servier.png LovelessBeth (talk) 21:54, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@LovelessBeth The credit should be placed in the source section of your image. You could say something like "Modified work from File:Urinary system - Nephron 3 -- Smart-Servier.png by Laboratoires Servier". Also don't forget to put your own name as the author and use {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} as the license. You can use this image as a reference File:Coronary vessels, with annotated arteries.svg to see how they have done it. Hope this helps. Tvpuppy (talk) 02:27, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

(after reading via Google translate) I'm very confused by this. (1) if this is a question about the Japanese-language Wikipedia, it would be better to ask on the Japanese-language Wikipedia: . (2) Google translate says part of this is "When creating a Wikipedia draft, it seems like I made the line width too wide." I can't think of anything in a Wikipedia article that would be about "line width" but perhaps there is something in the Japanese-language Wikipedia that I'm unaware of. Images from InciWeb

The page is run by NWCG which is a federal organization I believe. The news pulls and uses InciWeb images all the time and credits "InciWeb". But can I upload those images to commons to use in various pages? TacitMoose (talk) 20:44, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Unless you can demonstrate that a particular image was taken by a federal employee as part of their job (or, similarly an employee of some state or other government that puts all of their content into the public domain, or free-licenses it), the answer is going to be "no". When people allow the federal government to use photos they took, they don't waive their copyrights by doing that. - Jmabel ! talk 22:37, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Background transparency/cropping

Is there a place where one can request that someone with the relevant permissions / graphic editing package make backgrounds transparent and/or crops images correctly? @Issuial: see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content and en:Template:Non-free use rationale. Requesting clarification on contradictory policies

[edit]

COM:LANG says "Gallery names should generally be in the local language. See Commons:Galleries for the exact policy." This links to COM:GAL, which states "Unlike naming categories, where English is almost always used, galleries should be named in the language most associated with the subject." In instances where the local language is different from the language most commonly associated with the subject, which one should be used? I'm asking to see if gallery pages could be used to create a space for minority languages on Commons, as existing policy on category naming conventions leaves little room for those ever being used there. Crop error

[edit]

I'm trying to crop an image - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ione_Belarra_en_el_Consejo_de_Coordinaci%C3%B3n_de_Podemos.jpg - however, when I try to do so it takes me to a page saying "What to crop?" "Enter the URL or filename for an image you would like to crop." I enter the URL or file name and all it does it tell that the file exists but doesn't allow me to crop it. How do I crop this image? Helper201 (talk) 18:37, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Helper201: I suggest you use the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appear on the left panel of the image in question. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops you should upload the cropped version as a separate new image with a different name, but you have a choice. I hope you can see how everyone can save time and frustration by using CropTool. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 18:51, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
